Innovation 'Elevator Pitch':
Our web based visualisations of NHS datasets is disrupting the analytics market. It allows systems to understand cause and effect within their health economies and test hypothesis in real time by interacting with the data through drop down menus
Overview of Innovation:
Our vision is to give every NHS system leader in England a clear picture of the end to end journey for the populations they serve. At the same time we aim to save the NHS £millions by disrupting the market for low level analytics!
The challenge currently faced by all healthcare leaders is a lack of insight and meaningful, consistently-reported analysis regarding the position and performance of the healthcare system. This lack of insight hampers the efficacy of the strategic and operational planning process and the scope and effectiveness of monitoring and oversight.
This challenge sits in the context of masses of existing publicly available healthcare data. Data that’s time consuming for providers to prepare but underutilised due to its format, shape and local capacity and capability.
Our vision is to make VUIT.ONLINE, our information and insight portal, available across the entire NHS in England. The tools we’ve developed allow users to interrogate data across an provider, CCG, ST or ICS quickly and efficiently in a way which informs decision making and allows the impact of interventions to be validated using existing national datasets.
VUIT.ONLINE re-configures, combines and visualises NHS and other national datasets in a way that allows them to be used to understand system and provider performance and demand in context.
Our front-end combines different datasets to create insights not available from any one alone, for example combining DTOC data with hospital bed-base to understand the effective scale of the DTOC issue, or comparing RTT data with consultant workforce to contextualise waiting list trends.
By doing this we can support system leaders to gain a deep understanding of cause and effect related to key strategic issues within their ICSs and model the impact of decisions they may wish to make to address those issues.
All this is achieved with data which is consistent across all providers, layered from multiple data sources and, most importantly is instantly available, at the national, regional and place based level for comparison and analysis through an online portal.
The impact of VUIT.ONLINE is not just the creation and availability of new insights from data, but the speed at which it can be manipulated to test hypotheses.The financial viability of VUIT.ONLINE comes from its ability to deliver this with an absolute lack of in-house or procured analytical or BI resource in the form of consulting and CSU costs which currently run into many millions.

Overview of Innovation:
Prodlytic – Analyses information via auto-tracking everything your users do (Staff or patients) whilst using your App or software. No more guesswork, coding, or painful waiting around for data to instantly understand user behaviour, problems with navigation or software, assisting you to make better, faster decisions about the user or your software.

  • When or where do they stop using our service? Highlighting the potential for a follow up or possibly needs a red flag to the clinical team?
 This technology has been used by leading car manufacturers to understand how their in car entertainment (ICE) is being used and by TV set top box providers to understand viewing and selection habits.

Benefit to NHS:
The Prodlytic tools allows a NHS organisation or clinical team to understand the issues in using or engaging with a digital platform and will give an insight into their users. Whether that’s to:
  • Identify patient and staff usage – when and how often and for what purpose
  • Understand issues related to using the software.
  • Identify patients that may be indicating clinical problems or changes to their condition due to the usage analytics. Such as:
    • Delays in entering data and changes over time to this behaviour e.g.: If the App asks ‘How are you feeling?’  and they take a long time to indicate ‘OK’ or significantly longer than previous then this may indicate that things are not OK or they are struggling to answer. 
Thus patients can be flagged for investigation or intervention, prior to them calling or recognising that their condition has changed. Leading to improved outcomes and potentially saving money where intervention has ensured that an A&E visit or other catastrophic event has been avoided.
Costs related to the time for staff or patients to use software can be noted and any sticking points highlighted for review. 
Greater values can be gained from insights into use and external effects etc. and related costs can be achieved by combining data from multiple sources, or aggregation of data from different systems, analysis of complex information into meaningful reports or dashboards.

We are aware this will require gaining various NHS data governance permissions to do this work and will work with organisations to ensure they are fully compliant.

We are looking for organisations to work with to demonstrate the value and benefits of our technology in improving the users experience, the performance of their software and to gain insights into the valuable information they have and have access to but have not yet realised it. 
By using our analytics to spot trends in an automated way, we could help prevent patients mental health deteriorating, saving repeat visits, reducing costs and improving patient experience.
What is the intellectual property status of your innovation?:
Proprietary closed-source codebase owned by D4Software with some open-source contributions published and more planned.

Prodlytic follows industry best practise and is subject to regular third party security audits. Our codebase is totally private. Open-source contributions to some parts of the system are correctly licenced where applicable.

With support & facilitation users can label strong feelings & name issues, as well as articulate hopes & concerns all of which are critical for building resilience & supporting recovery.

Independent research shows that the use of the software is associated with emotional & cognitive responses, reductions in psychological distress & building of empathy & insight.

The ProReal platform helps people create a visual representation of how they experience a situation so they can explore different perspectives, visualise futures & solve problems. Clients enter a secure, virtual landscape & add avatars & props to create representations of real-world scenarios.

£9.49 billion was planned to be spent by CCGs on mental health services in 2016/17 – up from £9.15 billion in 2015/16. This amounts to 13.1% of planned CCG spending, up from 12.5% in 2015.16 Figures for individual CCG areas can be found using NHS England’s Mental Health Five Year Forward View Dashboard.  This does not account for all spending on mental health services, because specialised mental health commissioning is the responsibility of NHS England rather than CCGs.

The software has been designed to be very easy to use - most clients learn how to use it in the first 5-10 minutes. For those using it with others in their work, most people require 15-20 hours of training, much of which is practice time. Online training is delivered via three webinars, reading material, reflective practice/assignment work and a formal assessment at the end. Face-to-face training is also offered for groups.
A suitable laptop or desktop computer (Windows or Mac are fine), an unrestricted internet connection and permission to install the software on your device is required. ProReal can be accessed 24/7 online via a secure login providing flexibility, convenience and increased access for clients to do self-help online.

Benefit to WM population:
There are an estimated 4.032 million people in 2014–15 living in the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA). The population is culturally diverse with over 22% from Black & Asian Minority Ethnic communities, ranging from 2.3% in Cannock Chase to 42% in Birmingham.
Nearly a quarter of adults living in the WMCA are experiencing a mental health problem at any one time. The risks of poor mental health are not uniformly distributed across the WMCA population. They are influenced by social, economic & physical environmental factors & social inequalities in particular.
The aggregate economic & social cost of mental health problems in the WMCA is estimated at around £12.6 billion in 2014–15 equivalent to a cost of about £3,100 per head of population.
Mental ill health is estimated to cost the NHS nearly £2 billion a year in the WMCA. Only about half of this represents the direct costs of treatment & care for people with diagnosable mental health problems. The other half arises mainly because large numbers of people with long-term physical conditions such as diabetes & asthma, also suffer from depression or anxiety & this greatly increases the costs of physical health care.
Following the successes of the use of our software in commercial settings we had long been of the opinion that it could be beneficial in a healthcare capacity as well. To begin our investigation of this theory we secured funding from NHS England’s SBRI Healthcare programme as part of their initiative to find new technology solutions to unmet mental healthcare needs. This ‘Phase 1’ contract allowed us to conduct a pilot study using the ProReal software with a small group of adult offenders who were residents of a therapeutic wing of a category B prison in the north of England.
Over the course of 7 weeks our therapeutic intervention at this Serco managed prison consisted of 6, hour-long, group sessions lead by a qualified counsellor on the prison staff who we trained in the use of the ProReal software.
Results indicated that using our software improved participants’ capacity to elicit emotional responses & initiate further cognitive processing – both fundamental aspects of improved mental health. The study also produced good preliminary indications that using the ProReal software helps reduce psychological distress & improve general wellbeing. In addition participants reported enhanced levels of self-expression, new insights, development of empathy & the ability to build stronger relationships.

Benefit to WM population:
Knowledge of the risk profile of the region’s population (based around a population segmentation approach) will help Health & Care stakeholders across the West Midlands commission and deliver appropriate preventative services that will drive positive health outcomes for the 'at need' populations of the West Midlands. 

Through the innovative use of information technology to identify patients most in need of an intervention (impactable patient cohorts) Sollis Clarity helps to identify patients who could most benefit from earlier, better informed health care interventions.
The Sollis population health analytics platform allows the patient population to be risk assessed to provide timely, evidential data to all members of a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), to include clinicians but not limnited to them. This enables MDT members to provide focused levels of care to specific groups of patients, reducing the risk of a patient’s condition worsening due to it being identified early so assisting MDT members in identifying and improving the care of at-risk patients.
Much can be achieved through the acquisition of primary care, secondary care, community care, mental health, prescribing and social care data. It can provide a rich understanding of how healthcare resources are delivered and consumed and by whom. Such analysis can aid an understanding of whether scarce resources are being deployed to those population groups in greatest need.
It is important that any population health analysis should focus not on single disease conditions, but on the burden of multi-morbidity observable in a local population.  Population health programmes that have the best chance of success will be those that demonstrate an understanding of the importance of multi-morbidity and its impact on the local health and care economy.
Using data to identify early healthcare interventions can provide significant benefits to patients, particularly those with long-term conditions. Providing the functionality to make real time decisions based on clinical evidence will improve outcomes for patients.
Sollis exist to help our customers deliver better patient outcomes, better patient experiences at an affordable cost and are wholly focused on the delivery of insights that will help deliver a sustainable and transformed health and care system in the West Midlands.
Current and planned activity: 
We are currently providing analytics support to thirty (30) plus Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) nationally as well as nine hundred (900) plus GP practices and a number of NHS Vanguards, principally Multispecialty Community Providers (MCPs).

We would like to engage with health and care professionals involved in the development and evaluation of New Care Models throughout the West Midlands who want to use evidence based data to understand patterns of multi-morbidity and its relationship to utilisation, costs and outcomes. We are particularly interested in engaging with Sustainability & Transformation Paernerships (STPs) and emerging Accountable Care Systems (ACS).
